Preponderance of the Small

Hsiao Kwo indicates that (in the circumstances which it implies) there will be progress and success. (But) it will be advantageous to be firm and correct. (The things to which it points) may be done in small affairs, but not in great affairs. (It resembles) the flight of a bird, which brings with it an unfortunate surrender (of what is proper). The first SIX, divided, shows its subject (like a bird) flying, and ascending to the place of peril. There will be evil. The second SIX, divided, shows its subject passing by his ancestor, and meeting with his ancestress. He does not reach his prince, but meets with his minister. There will be no error. The third NINE, undivided, shows its subject not going quite beyond (what is right). (If he proceed at all), he will be exposed to the peril of a thunder-storm, and to the misfortune of his carriage being overturned. There will be evil. The fourth NINE, undivided, shows its subject moving onwards, but missing the proper course, and meeting the person (whom he should not meet). Going forward will lead to peril, and necessarily to be guarded against. Let him not act thus. The fifth SIX, divided, shows its subject (like a bird) flying, and letting fall its arrow. There will be no error. The topmost SIX, divided, shows its subject not meeting (the conditions of the hexagram), and exceeding (the proper limits). (It will be ill) for him to attempt to fly high; and (well) for him to abide where he is. There will be misfortune.
