I-Ching

Breakthrough

Kwâi indicates (by the firm lines) the going forward with determination of the superior man, and (by the one weak line) his open display of the matter (to be determined). There will be the successful accomplishment of his object. We see the advantage of being firm and correct. Movement in any direction, when the display is kept back, will be a misfortune. The first NINE, undivided, shows its subject with the vigour in his feet, (ready to march), but that if he advance, and do not secure the sympathy of the subject of the fourth line, there will be misfortune. The second NINE, undivided, shows its subject full of apprehension and caution. (In his circumstances), to march on will be perilous. It will be advantageous for him to have to do with the practice of arms. The third NINE, undivided, shows its subject, strong in the bones of his cheeks, and thus coming to misfortune. The superior man will himself be determined and stop his onward movement. Should he walk on (uncontrolled), he will be exposed to the rain, and appear to be wet and to excite dissatisfaction. There will be no error in his so restraining himself. The fourth NINE, undivided, shows its subject with the flesh removed from his thighs. He walks with difficulty, and will be made to sit (in the carriage like a passenger). The fifth NINE, undivided, shows its subject firmly and correctly determined. (If he try to advance), he will be like a goat butting against a fence, and unable to go forward. He will not fail in the attainment of his purpose. The topmost SIX, divided, shows its subject without any means of shouting (for help from the party with the one line below). In the end there will be misfortune.
