I-Ching

Contemplation

Kwân shows the subject of the hexagram (to be like) the worshipping minister of Heaven, who has nothing to do with the (worshippers) beneath him. The subject's sincere and reverent demeanour should be readily seen (by all the people). The first SIX, divided, shows (the subject of the line as) a youth who looks (at the two lines above him), but is not blamed on that account. The second SIX, divided, shows (the subject) peeping out from a door. The advantage will be found in the firm correctness of a female. The third SIX, divided, shows (the subject) looking at (the men of) his life, (to see how they all) advance or recede. The fourth SIX, divided, shows (the subject) contemplating the glory of the kingdom. It will be advantageous for him, being firm and correct, to seek to be received by the Son of Heaven. The fifth NINE, undivided, shows (the subject) contemplating his own course. The superior man, with no thought of self-aggrandisement, should be firm and correct. The topmost NINE, undivided, shows (the subject) contemplating the (spirit of the) ordinances (which proclaim the rule of a sage, and) which he has not yet perfected.
